I’m a big fan of wellness shots. In fact, I partially credit them for why I never (ever!) get sick. In an ideal world I would take one every day, although I can’t say that’s my regular routine. I’d say I typically have two shots per week, or more if I ever start to feel like I’m going to get a cold. When this happens, I’ll immediately take one, and the cold never ends up coming. (As I’m editing/rereading this blog post I’m realizing that this sounds like a placebo effect, but I swear that it’s not, lol).
I figured there was no time like the present to share one of my favorite and simplest recipes, especially given the current circumstances impacting the entire planet. This healthy elixir is super easy to make, tasty (well, as far as wellness shots go), and sure to boost your immune system.
So, here is an immunity-boosting wellness shot to keep you healthy all year long…
Here’s a little insight on the ingredients:
Lemons, oranges and grapefruits are all high in vitamin C, a natural antioxidant that enhances the immune system by improving the function of natural killer cells and their helper cells (lymphocytes). Vitamin C also has both antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Lemons also contain zinc, which is a mineral needed to keep you healthy. Like vitamin C, it helps aid the immune system, keeping it in check so your body can fight off viruses and bacteria.
Now comes ginger. Ginger root is a powerful ingredient that has many, many health benefits, but for today we’ll stick to the immunity-boosting aspect. It’s anti-inflammatory, which helps the immune system longterm, because chronic inflammation increases your chances of getting sick. Ginger can specifically fight off cold and respiratory viruses (the latter is especially helpful for COVID-19). Lastly, it contains two natural antibiotics.
As for the cayenne: It contains a chemical called capsicum, which — yup you guessed it — is another rich source of vitamin C. Additionally, cayenne raises your body’s temperature to make you sweat, increasing your immune system’s activity.
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 cup fresh orange or grapefruit juice
- Fresh ginger
- Cayenne pepper, for dusting
- To turn fresh ginger into juice: Use a microplane to finely grate ginger, then squeeze the juice out of the pulp using cheesecloth or a nut-milk bag. You’ll need 2 tablespoons of ginger juice.
- Stir together the lemon, orange (or grapefruit) and ginger juices, then pour into shot glasses.
- Dust tops with cayenne. Enjoy!
I would love to see you making and taking these wellness shots! If you try them out, please post on your Instagram story and tag me @emilykgannon so I can see 🙂
