Beauty Resolutions for 2019

If you read this post of mine, then you know one of my goals for 2019 is to refresh my skincare / hair / makeup routines. With that being said, I thought it might be a good idea to share some beauty resolutions for this year — ones that we can all collectively work on.

These are mostly ideas that I’ve been meaning to implement or know I should be doing, but just haven’t gotten around to it or are too lazy to execute regularly. I figured if that’s what I’ve been doing, there are probably a lot of other people out there who feel the same.

So, without further ado, here are some beauty resolutions for 2019, so we can all have a lil glow up this year 🙂 I hope you enjoy! x

sleep on a silk pillowcase.

This is one of those things that I’ve been meaning to do for literally years, but never get around to. I’m determined to finally purchase a few silk pillowcases to get some real beauty sleep this year. Apparently sleeping on a silk keeps your hair getting frizzy and getting bends and kinks in it while you sleep. This will make second or third day hair so much easier to deal with, which is a huge bonus.

The silk material also is supposed to help your skin stay hydrated throughout the night, and prevents you from getting those little wrinkle lines on your face that you get from other fabrics.

While I’m typically pretty good about cleaning my makeup brushes, I do think I could be a little more consistent. This is a pretty obvious point, but keeping your brushes clean will help maintain a clear complexion. Every time you use them, they get a little more build-up from leftover makeup, any particles that were on your face, moisturizer from your skin — everything. Then, you swirl the brush all over your face day-in and day-out… yikes! I vow to wash them each and every week.

hydration is key.

You already know this, but hydration really is key, especially as a regular part of your beauty routine. Getting in your daily intake will help your skin, hair, and nails — they’ll all thank you.

Drinking more water will help your skin retain it’s elasticity and flush out toxins. It also helps your hair remain strong, preventing breakage and damage, and keeping it shinier. And as far as for your nails, the water keeps them strong and shiny.

Fake a Full Night’s Sleep

Happy New Year’s Eve! Do you have fun plans to ring in the new year? Today’s post is perfect for NYE, because I’m sharing a few of my top tips and tricks to fake a full night’s sleep. Feel free to ring in the new year all night long, and wake up the next morning locked and loaded with some tricks to wake right back up.

No matter how little sleep I get or how late I went to bed/early I woke up, I always like to look (and feel) as well-rested as possible. Though I pretty much always get a full night’s sleep, when I don’t, I try my best to pretend it didn’t happen, lol. Otherwise, I think I’d be yawning all day long just thinking about it.

First thing’s first, you’re going to need a cup of coffee, or some other form of caffeine if coffee isn’t your vice of choice. Maybe add a shot of espresso (or two). Drink some ice cold water, too, while you’re waiting for your coffee to brew. This always seems to perk me up — and you probably could use some extra hydration anyways (we all could).

Now, let’s head to the beauty cabinet and pull out the staples. You’ll need concealer — obviously — and a nude eyeliner. The concealer will help cover up any under-eye circles that may be showing, which are a tell-tale sign of lack of sleep. Lately I’ve been obsessed with this one, and I like to apply it in a triangle shape under my eyes to really brighten up the whole area.

The nude eyeliner is for your lower waterline. I learned this trick years and years ago, and always whip it out when necessary. Once you apply it to your waterline, your eyes will immediately look brighter and more awake — it’s such a good little hack. You can find the one I keep on hand here.

I saved the best (eye) trick for last. I recently discovered these eye drops, and ever since there’s not a day that goes by where I don’t use them. They’re designed to make your eyes look whiter, brighter, and more radiant — perfect. I don’t know why but my eyes looking white is so important to me; I think of it as the same as having white teeth. These eye drops are perfect, and will get rid of any redness from lack of sleep.

Now onto skin. I don’t know if this is just in my head, but I sometimes feel like when I don’t get enough sleep, my skin lacks any bit of glow that it may have had before.

To get that glow back, I like to use a radiant moisturizer and a nice bronzer and highlighter. My favorite moisturizer for times like this is this one (I use the color Nude Glow). It isn’t shimmery, but very illuminating and perks your skin right up.

I also recently picked up this little palette, and it is absolutely perfect for adding a glow. The bronzey shade is so nice for bronzer if you have lighter skin like mine, otherwise it’s a great blush shade for darker skin tones. The highlighters are super super glowy. This combo will make your skin look radiant and healthy, not like you’re still half-asleep.

Okay the last two tips I have are a little more wellness-oriented. I’ve mentioned before that I carry a little bottle of peppermint essential oil pretty much everywhere I go, and it’s perfect for waking yourself up. I like to put a little on my wrists and behind my ears. It’s invigorating and wakes you right up. If you have 100% peppermint essential oil, it’s also safe to ingest, so I like to put a tiny bit in my water, too, if I really need a wake-me-up 🙂

Lastly, I like to do a meditation that’s geared towards mornings. If you have a Headspace subscription, they have two options that are perfect for this: Waking Up and Early Mornings. If you don’t have Headspace (first of all: get on that! It’s literally the best), then another good option is this one, which you can find on YouTube. Meditation is inherently relaxing, so it’s not alarming/going to jolt you out of sleepiness. It’s perfect for easing into the day, and waking up on the right side of the bed.

How to Make Your Pedicures Last Longer

Although we’re nearing the end of summer (one word: how?), here in Los Angeles, pedicure season is pretty much all year round. Even though I’ve always liked to keep a nice pedicure throughout the year, back home in New York it was definitely more of a focus in the summertime since that’s the only time you wore sandals or any other kind of open-toed shoes, unless you were going on vacation.

With that said, I was thinking of all the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years on how to make your pedicures last longer, because there’s almost nothing worse than having the perfect pedicure get ruined sooner than expected.

I specifically remember this happening to me on one family vacation when I was young — it was a Disney cruise and we were in the Caribbean. At one of our stops we had gone in the ocean, and when I walked out of the water I noticed I had somehow completely ruined my pedicure while I was in there, chipping the polish on my big toe. Obviously this isn’t the end of the world, but I remember being so disappointed because it was towards the beginning of the trip and I had just gotten them done before we left. I knew I was going to be wearing sandals the rest of the trip, but I hated the way they looked with my chipped polish.

Anyways, the point is, I really hate when a good pedicure doesn’t last long, so today I wanted to share some of my tips on how to make your pedicures last longer, including some of my favorite products. I hope you enjoy!

  1. Keep your top coat in tip-top shape. I once had a pedicurist tell me to touch up my top coat once a week to keep my pedicure looking its best, and I’ve never looked back since. Not only does this keep your nail polish looking as nice and shiny as when you first got them done (or did them yourself), but it also keeps them from chipping since it keeps the protective barrier fresh.   2. Care for your cuticles. This is something that I think can be overlooked so easily, but it helps so much. Apply a cuticle oil every few days to keep them moisturized and fresh, so your polish doesn’t chip from the base of your nail. When your cuticles are dry, your polish is more prone to chip from that area.
  3. Have a polish on hand. When I get my nails done, I like to either bring my own polish, choose one that I know I have a similar color to, or simply take note of the name of the polish and buy it next time I’m out and about. Whatever the case may be, I would recommend having a polish that you will be able to touch up your pedicure with, just in case you do have a mishap.
  4. Protect your feet. When you’re at home and not particularly showing off your new pedi, I always recommend keeping your feet protected with some nice fuzzy socks or slippers. Since you’re lounging at home, it’s the perfect time to slip into your comfiest pair of socks/slippers, which will protect your perfect pedicure. This also helps keep the rest of your feet soft and smooth, just like they feel post-pedi.
  5. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Keeping your skin moisturized will, of course, make sure your skin stays smooth and soft. After a pedicure, your feet always feel so nice because of the exfoliating and hydrating products and techniques they use. If you continue to moisturize consistently during the following weeks, you’ll be able to maintain that post-pedi feeling. I recommend this and this.

Blonde Hair Kit

Wow — this blog post has been long-awaited! I have been planning this post with these products for months now, and am so happy to finally see it come to life. I’ve been testing out a whole slew of products, and have the best of the best to share with you today. As anyone with blonde hair knows, it is so, so hard to keep your hair the right shade. I am not someone who likes warm blonde hair on myself, in fact I like there to be no golden tones at all. So, it’s very important for me to stay strict with my routine to keep the color of my hair just how I like it — a cool, vanilla-like shade of blonde.

With that said, it is very important to keep an arsenal of tried-and-true products that work to keep your blonde just the right shade of blonde. So, today I am sharing my absolute favorite hair products for blonde hair, which will all help to keep yours looking beautiful. I hope you enjoy! Without further ado, here is my blonde hair kit (and get ready, because it’s a lengthy one!)…

First thing’s first: shampoo and conditioner. Your blonde hair routine starts right in the shower with these products. I have a few different duos that I swear by. I have been testing them for some time now, and really, really love them all. I like to use purple shampoo a few times a week (not every single time I wash), so that it keeps my hair from getting brassy, but doesn’t get too harsh or make my hair too silvery. And, as I’m sure you guys have heard before, it’s best to not use the same haircare products over and over and over religiously, because eventually your hair will get used to them and they begin to lose their effectiveness. So, it’s perfect that I have a few recommendation for you that you can rotate in and out to keep switching it up on your hair!

The first one that I love is by R+Co. I discovered this brand during my internship at Birchbox a few years ago, and have never looked back since. I have loved every product I’ve tried from them — even the dry shampoo! If you’re a regular reader of my blog you know I’m not a huge fan of any dry shampoos, so that says a lot. The Sunset Blvd shampoo and conditioner is created specifically for blonde hair, with that purple tint that you know and love if you’re a blondie. One thing that sets this duo apart from the rest is that it truly is luminizing. So not only does it combat brassiness, but it also seems to lighten up my hair a bit and bump up the vibrancy — it’s amazing!

Another one of my favorites is by IGK: their Instafamous Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner. Again, these have a very vibrant purple tone to them, which always makes me trust that they’re going to get the job done, lol! The thing I love the most about these — besides the fact that they get rid of any and all golden and brassy tones like they should — is that they both make my hair very shiny and silky. The shampoo is also really gentle, so I don’t have to worry about it counteracting itself and stripping the dye from your hair.

The last shampoo and conditioner set I have been using and loving lately is by Oribe, which is probably my all-time favorite haircare brand. I got to try out a lot of their products while I was — yup you guessed it — interning at Birchbox, and I was always impressed by the quality. The Dry Texturizing Spray of theirs will always be a favorite of mine! This shampoo/conditioner set really is the best of both worlds, kind of like a hybrid between the two above. Although I only have a sample size, I have fallen in love quickly! Again, I was impressed with how well it maintains a cool shade of blonde, and, similar to the IGK Instafamous, it keeps my hair feeling silky and soft. I absolutely hate when shampoo leaves my hair feeling dry or brittle, so this is definitely a deal-breaker for me.

Aside from shampoo and conditioner, I find that having a few good treatments on hand is essential. Because of the bleach we put on our hair regularly, it’s hard to keep blonde hair healthy. (Also, does anyone else find it super frustrating that brown hair always looks nice and shiny, but it’s nearly impossible for blonde hair to get that same glossy look? Case in point.). So I have two favorites that I just can’t live without.

The first one is from the same line from Oribe: the Bright Blonde Radiance & Repair Treatment. This stuff helps with the overall health of my hair, like split ends, brittleness, and the like. It also makes my hair super soft, but doesn’t weigh my hair down. A win-win-win! I use it whenever I feel like I want a little bit of an extra deep conditioning, while also freshening up the blonde.

The last product is by Rita Hazan, and it is the Ultimate Shine Gloss. I use this when I am in-between hair appointments and want to preserve and extend the color a little longer. It makes my roots blend nicer into the rest of my hair, and adds the perfect fresh-from-the-salon gloss to my locks.

Blowdry Basics



With summer’s humidity finally making its way out, it’s that time of year when I break out my blowdryer and round brush and start drying my hair again. In the summer months I find it’s such a waste of time for me — within minutes of stepping outside my hair is back to its wavy (and somewhat frizzy) natural state.

I know from personal experience how long it takes to find the perfect way to blow dry your hair so that you get that just-back-from-Drybar look, but after years of trying different techniques and products, I finally have a routine that I love. So in order to make it a little easier on you, today I’m going to share my exact routine with you…

First thing’s first: it’s usually best to start drying your hair when it’s very, very wet, not giving it too much time to air dry by itself. Once it starts drying on its own, you get the natural cowlicks and kinks that your hair has. So, if you start drying it right away before that happens, you have the chance to smooth them all out.

Going along those lines, I like to start at the front with the face-framing pieces, and get those completely dry before anything else. This is for the same reason: I want to smooth out those pieces completely so that I can manipulate them just the way I want.

I take the round brush and hold about 1-inch sections of hair at a time. I hold the hair out taut, then roll the round brush under, starting from the root and going out towards the ends of the hair. I follow with the dryer (with the diffuser nozzle on, always!) from over-head, pointing the nozzle downwards so that the flyaways lie flat. I go over each section a few times — until it is completely dry — then I move on to the next section.

I am totally obsessed with this hair dryer… It makes such a difference! I definitely think investing in a quality one is important. They don’t damage your hair as much, dry your hair faster, and give you a better look with less frizz. An all-around win!

Once the face-framing pieces are done, I rough-dry the the rest until it gets about 50% dry. Then, I apply my oil-based product to keep hair smooth and protect it from the heat. After it’s evenly distributed throughout my hair, I  clip the top half up and go back in with the round brush following the process that I did with the face-framing pieces.

After the bottom half is completely dry, I let down the top half and do the exact same thing. The only section I do differently is towards the back of the head near the crown. So for these sections, I like to take the round brush and dryer and go upwards, which gives a bit more volume.

Once my hair is completely dry and smooth, I like to take a texturizing spray and spritz a little on each side towards the middle of the shaft. Then, I take my hands and fluff up my hair a little, in order to give my hair a little bit of a messier bedhead look. This adds a bit of volume and less of a perfectly blown-out/super sleek look, which I prefer.

Current Skincare Routine



First beauty post from my new apartment — yay!

My skincare routine isn’t something I like to change very often. I feel like once I find products that I like, I don’t want to risk breaking out or ruining a good thing by introducing new ones into my routine. That being said, I’ve always been told that you should switch out your shampoos and conditioners every so often so that they don’t lose their effectiveness on your hair, so I always take this principle and apply it to skincare, as well.

I feel like if I keep using the same products day in and day out for a long enough period of time, my skin will get used to them and they will eventually stop being effective. So, I recently have been trying out a few new products and love them so far, so I wanted to share my current skincare routine with you all…

As I’ve mentioned before, skincare is all about simplicity for me. I don’t find that piling on 101 products is what works best for me; I like to keep it simple with just a few key products, and then supplementing with various masks or treatments when needed.

I’ve been using this cleansing bar for a few months now and have really been loving it. I just repurchased a brand new one, which was what reminded me to write this post! I never would have picked this up on my own; it’s what my mom uses and to be honest I always thought it was a little weird. Looking back, I have no idea why I thought that, but I wish I thought to try it sooner because it’s so great! It’s exactly what I need: something basic and simple to cleanse your skin, without any of the bells and whistles. Also, the price is insane — I buy it for $2 at my local store (um, hello!).

I use the cleanser both morning and night, and then I follow up with a moisturizer. For the day-time, I like this one. It’s a gel-like consistency that is super light-weight and refreshing. It feels a little bit cooling and smells a bit minty, so it helps to perk me up in the morning, which is always nice! Once it sets in, I feel like it makes my skin soft and smooth, so I love that about it too. I had tried it first as a sample from Sephora, and I’m so glad I did because I had never heard of the brand before!

For night-time, I replace that with this moisturizer instead. It is a bit thicker and richer (like a buttery consistency), so it’s perfect to slather on before bed. I like to think that it works its magic and gives me a deep hydration while I sleep, so that I wake up with perfectly hydrated and supple skin in the morning. I should also mention that this also feels rather lightweight on the skin — even though it’s such a thick cream, it doesn’t feel that way on the skin.

The last key part of my skincare routine is an exfoliating scrub. Lately I’ve been using this one a few times a week, and I love it so far. It was another sample that I got from Sephora, but I’m definitely going to purchase the full-size when I run out! I never used to be picky about exfoliators or scrubs (I kind of always felt like they did the same thing) but this one is by far my favorite. It leaves my skin feeling so smooth and invigorated, and immediately after I feel like my skin has a nice natural glow to it.
