Why I Use a Jade Roller + Why You Should Too

About a year ago I noticed jade rollers trending everywhere I looked. As someone who eats up new beauty techniques and also loves the idea of Eastern medicine and healing crystals, I was instantly on-board.

The basic idea is that you roll the cold jade stones over your skin, which stems from a centuries-old Chinese beauty tradition. Jade is known in Eastern medicine as a healing semi-precious gemstone and is a sign of power and immortality, which is why is made its way into holistic spas. These healing stones have been turned into a beauty tool — a jade roller — and are used as a little beauty booster.

I use a jade roller every morning with my skincare routine, and figured today I would share why I use one and why you should too. I hope you enjoy x

Rolling jade across your skin will amp up your skincare routine in no time. It boosts your circulation and de-puffs your skin — making your face noticeably less puffy, defining cheekbones, the jawline, and the eye area. It also improves the skin’s elasticity and promotes lymphatic drainage, which is known to aid in detoxifying.

Skincare experts also believe that jade rollers can help brighten and awaken your complexion, and even reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. That seemed like a far stretch for me, but the more I looked into it, the more it seemed to make sense. The facial muscles hold a lot of tension, which causes fine lines and wrinkles around your forehead and eyes; the jade roller helps relax and roll out these muscles.

Additionally, it helps your skincare products soak into the skin better. Instead of having the products just sitting on top of your skin, this helps absorb the products so you really get to reap the benefits of moisturizers and serums.

Aside from all of these benefits, I also find jade rolling to be one of my favorite parts of my morning routine. While it feels nice and relaxing, it also helps me wake up a bit. And lastly, if you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that major headaches and serious jaw pain are two things that I deal with on a regular basis, and lucky for me, jade rollers are helpful for both of these things. If I’m feeling a headache come on, I like to use the jade roller on my temples, and if my jaw is acting up, I use it all around that area to relax the muscles.

So, how do you use it? It’s really quite simple. Start with your usual skincare routine — cleanse, exfoliate, apply serums and moisturizers — the whole nine yards. Sometimes I like to use a sheet mask and use the jade roller after that, when you have the excess product on your face.

Then, it’s time to break out the jade roller. Typically, it’s best to store it in the refrigerator so that’s it’s chilled when you use it. All you have to do is massage it all over your face for a few minutes. Roll upward and outward, working around the contours of your face and adding a little more pressure with the upwards motions.

I personally start with the jawline and roll up towards my ear, then move up my face keeping with that general motion. I like to go over the same spot about three times before moving to the next. When I get to my eyes, I sweep upwards towards my temples. From my nose, I start on the side of my nose and go straight out towards the sides of my face. On both my chin and forehead, I roll straight upwards.
